 File Encryption

File Security brings state-of-the-art encryption and decryption to home and corporate users. Since File Security has essentially no learning curve, users can immediately begin to encrypt and secure their most important files. Home users would benefit by using File Security to encrypt their banking information, e-mail documents, and any other file with special personal value.

File Security uses a third-party ActiveX control with a maximum key length of 128-bits to encrypt your files. This encryption control is unbreakable and will provide all users with peace of mind.

In addition to encrypting and decrypting files, File Security can also make self-extracting encrypted files. This feature would be helpful if you need to e-mail an encrypted file to a friend or colleague who does not have File Encryption/Decryption.

 Other Settings

Spy Killer

The Spy Killer title screen shows three buttons which lead to different sections:

Setting the scanning options

When you start Spy Killer the first time, no sections to scan are specified. Select which sections you want Spy Killer to scan in the list at the left side.

For the beginning, you should select the memory-scan, both registry scans and the drive where your windows installation resists.

It is not necessary to always scan all drives, but recommended from time to time.

Your scanning settings will be stored and used the next time when Spy Killer is started. If you have Spy Killer autostarting with windows, the same settings will be used.

Note: The only exception is, if you run Spy Killer from the explorer by right-clicking a drive or folder. In this case only the particular drive\folder will be scanned, but your scanning settings will not be overwritten and used again when Spy Killer is started regulary the next time.

A grayed icon means that some, but not all subsections are selected. For example, check the "My computer" icon to quickly set Spy Killer for a complete system scan. To start scanning, press the appropriate Button in the title screen.

 While scanning...

Depending on your selection, the scan may take from a second up to a few minutes. The progress bar indicates the remaining time for the current operation. Watch the "summary" section while scanning, it gives you an overview about detected spyware components.
Once the scan is complete, you should take a look in the log file Spy Killer has generated. If spyware has been detected, it is recommended to save it to disk for later analysis. Click the "continue" button to obtain a list of all detected components (if any).

Note :
To abort scanning, click the "Cancel" button to return to the title screen immediately.

Reinstalling components from a backup

If you wish to re-install components you previously removed using Spy Killer, open the backup-manager from the title screen (use the button shown below), and choose the desired backup in the following list. After selecting the backup, click the "Restore" button to start the installation.

Editing the "Ignorelist"

Sometimes you want to keep an particular snoopware system remaining on your system, and don't want Spy Killer to detect its components over and over again. For this purpose an ignorelist has been implemented in Spy Killer. You find the ignorelist under configuration\ignorelist.

Any item in this list will be treated separately by Spy Killer, it will still be recognized, but not show up in the scan-result list or getting removed.

File Encryption

Encrypting files...

You just need to provide the source and destination files and the password. Clicking Encrypt button will do the job.

Decrypting files...

Select the encrypted file as the source and provide the required password and a destination. Then click the Decrypt button to decrypt the encrypted file.

Encrypting folders...

To encrypt a folder, you have to specify the folder as the source and then provide a destination and a password. Then click the Encrypt button to encrypt the specified folder.

Decrypting folders...

Spy Killer

  1. What is Spyware?

Spyware is a software that is launched without your knowledge every time you connect to the Internet, and uploads information from your PC.

  1. What is Adware?

Adware is any software application in which advertising banners are displayed while the program is running.

  1. What are Spyware cookies?

A Spyware cookie is any cookie that is not used only by a single site for its private interactions with its users, but is shared across sites. When multiple sites read from the same cookie, or when they pass info from the cookie on to another site, those sites effectively share information.

  1. How does Spy Killer protect me?

SpyKiller uses a new and different approach to Spyware. SpyKiller blocks the intrusion of these programs

before they are allowed to access your PC and personal information.

  1. I can just turn off images to get rid of ads. Why use Spy Killer?

SpyKiller has several advantages over doing this:
1) Even if images are turned off, you web browser will show a blank box where the ad would be if you did show the image. With SpyKiller, this box is gone too, giving you more screen space to see what you want.
2) With SpyKiller, you might not have to turn off images anymore--most ads will be gone and you can see the images without seeing the ads!

  1. Is there not a law against Spyware?

There is a bill. Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., introduced S. 3180, the "Spyware Control and Privacy Protection Act" on Oct 9, 2000. Under this law, manufacturers that build spyware into their products must give consumers clear and conspicuous notice - at the time of installation - that the software contains spyware. Such a notice would describe what information would be collected and to whom it would be sent. The spyware would then be forced to lie dormant unless the consumer chooses to enable it. S. 3180 would exempt spyware used to gather information that would only be used to provide technical support for the software, or to determine if a given user is a licensed user of the product.

File Encryption

  1. What is encryption/decryption?

Encryption is the process of encoding data into cipher, a form unreadable without a decoding key. Decryption is the reverse process of converting encoded data to its original plain text form. When a user encodes a file, another user cannot decode and read the file without the decryption key.

  1. What does it mean to encrypt a file?

Encrypting a document means to scramble the contents using sophisticated and proven mathematical formulas. There are a variety of well-accepted algorithms for performing this encryption process that have been proven secure over many years through rigorous testing.

  1. What’s the difference between 128-bit and 64-bit encryption?

The difference between these two types of encryption is one of capability. 128-bit encryption is exponentially more powerful than 64-bit encryption.

  1. Are there any folders that I cannot protect?

File Encryption will not permit you to protect folders that, when encrypted, might inhibit the operation of your system. These are:

Also, you may not select folders that have already been encrypted.

  1. Can I encrypt a folder on a compressed drive?

Yes. File Encryption fully supports all types of disk compression. The process for encrypting folders on a compressed drive is identical to the process for encrypting on an uncompressed hard drive.

  1. Can I encrypt folders on network drives?

No. Folders on network drives cannot be encrypted.

  1. Can I encrypt just one file in a folder?

Yes, you can encrypt just one file in a folder.

  1. What if my machine loses power while encrypting?

File Encryption encrypts data very quickly; even large folders will be encrypted in a matter of seconds. However, in the unlikely event of a power failure or other interruption during the encryption process, File Encryption has an internal process which ensures no data is lost or corrupted.

  1. What is encryption on-the-fly?

With the on-the-fly encryption the files are encrypted at the same time when applications read and write them to the disk. For example, if Microsoft Word writes parts of a document to the disk, these parts will be encrypted on-the-fly before they are written to the disk. This way the files are never without encryption on the disk.

  1. How are files decrypted once they have been encrypted?

Once you have encrypted a file, you can decrypt it the opposite way. Just select the encrypted file as the

source, provide the required password, and select a destination. Now you are ready to decrypt the file. Just

click the Decrypt button and your file is decrypted.
